having looked back at these, despite the probably obvious problems with them, i think i should try and use some other media to mix things up.

in an effort to challenge myself more, i will sometimes try to work more quickly while drawing from life. evidently i’m not so good with quick renderings. i’m not sure i’m comfortable trying to draw people on the subway and such but i found myself waiting for a haircut on a couch next to a cat. he was passing out and twitching like mad, it was pretty funny. feline figure drawing in moleskine.

badday - sebastien grainger

so i went to the bad day issue #3 launch and picked up the mag. true to form, sebastien‘s ad is in it, complete with my little drawing. a lot of people piled into a relatively small space but it seemed like a success so kudos to the kids running that popsicle stand. the original drawing can be viewed here.
i’m thinking (and hoping!) that this could be the start of something for me. all along i thought more traditional fine art would’ve been my preferred route but for the time being, i think i like the way this illustration thing seems and sounds. i was asked to design a logo and flyer for an event (which i’ll definitely touch on later) and my experience with that seemed like a mini version of what this stuff might really be like (according to my graphic designer friend). if it doesn’t lead anywhere, at least i’ll have tried, ha ha. but you never know, right?!?! wish me luck!

jenny lewis

i’m probably ignorant or wrong but i think she is among the modern, original (oxymoron??) actress-turned-musicians (think scarlet johansson or zooey deschanel). her solo stuff is more on the country side compared to rilo kiley but her voice is pleasant either way. jenny lewis in moleskine.

what i didn’t know about these creatures is that their sense of hearing and smell are terrific. apparently elephants can also hear through their trunks, which are sensitive to vibrations. this means communicating over distances that can be several kilometers away. they have built in telephones! they can hear through the ground! the rub? their sight isn’t so great usually. 8″ x 10″ in moleskine.

so this one won’t make much sense to just about everyone. this was requested by dave. he, kartik, and i had classes together. in and among our shenanigans (that’s right, not just mine) doodles came about and somehow this one (probably the leftmost actually) got called a doneus. i honestly can’t recall who came up with the doodle but i’m pretty sure i didn’t come up the name, ha ha. being the nerds that we were are, a catchphrase goes along with this and it goes sorta…something…like…

glasses

get it?!?!? puns aside, i kind of like the idea that using one of these items tends to aid one of your senses, while the other may tend to impair it. amorphous solids. ballpoint ink on paper. 7.5″ x 10.5″

political crisis
i’m not very political but it was kind of funny to me when harper almost got kicked off the helm of this popsicle stand i call my home country…right at the heels of his ridiculous-tax-payer-re-prime-ministerial-power-up. as if the governor general has power!?! she put a cork in the coalition’s plan (so i (might fail to) remember). the prime minister is safe in his seat…for now, ha ha. stephen harper, stéphane dion, gilles duceppe, and jack layton in moleskine.

sebastien grainger

His album was about the only album I was looking forward to this past fall and I don’t think it disappoints. I’ve been drawing in ballpoint a lot but seeing this and some other drawings makes me want to go back to the felt tips. Sebastien Grainger in moleskine.
