#illustration friday

hummingbird

i love that these birds can hover but i didn’t realise that they can also fly backwards. i had seen so many images of them mowin’ down on nectar but i never thought to secondarily observe their predatory nature. having the highest metabolism of just about all animals, they typically eat more than their weight in food daily. definitely one of my favourite birds. ballpoint pen in moleskine, 9×10″.
10.04.2009: illustration friday‘s theme this week is fleeting and while i have thinking about starting from scratch with one of their themes (which i have yet to do) this one came to mind for a few reasons.

national capital rockers 001
i’ve been checking out andrew carver’s blog for a while and he has a tonne of photos of various bands which i sometimes use as references for my ‘band life drawings.’ even though these are from stills i like to think of them as life drawings considering that a lot of these musicians strike some similar poses whether they like to think so or not. there’s so much going on at these shows that these frozen moments in time are pretty interesting to see, at least to me. bison b.c., critical convictions, and barn burner via the national capital rock blog, in moleskine.

antirorschach - daria

it’s probably not the most original idea but ever since i started ignoring boundaries created by the the folds / bindings in my sketchbooks i don’t think i’ve consciously used them as part of the concept. hell, this anti-rorschach (bad label?) concept itself probably isn’t original at all. i’ll give it a few more goes and see what the results look like. maybe you will too. daria werbowy, anti-rorschached, in moleskine.

thom yorke

i can’t say enough about this wonky eyed man. i’d have almost no faith in music without him and his band. his solo stuff is pretty damn good too. radiohead‘s frontman in moleskine.

emily haines

emily haines of metric. times two. pen in moleskine.

look ma, no pen! or paper! apparently i’m not the first to discover that i can use the moon to act as my drawing nib (i’ve forgotten the word for it too) but i still thought it was fun and cool. it’s bloody tough though. as shaky as the lines and writing looks, well, the writing is more legible here than it usually is. ha ha.

yin yang

what can i say? i’m a big fan of this movie.

10.09.2010. IF’s theme is proverb today so the yin yang concept applies, along with the proverb that came to mind: better the devil you know than the devil you don’t.

covering

the only thing i’ve ever drawn twice….so far. that might be a bad thing actually.
